The Forau d’Aigualluts is one of those places that sums up the whole valley in a single image: a waterfall that, instead of carrying on downstream, disappears into a sinkhole in the rock. Meltwater from the Aneto glacier drops out of sight here, runs for several kilometres beneath the massif and resurfaces on the French side, in the Val d’Aran, where it feeds the Garonne. The walk to it is an easy, near-level one, and it carries on to the meadows of the Plan d’Estan, with the peaks of the Maladeta massif straight ahead.
Starting point
The route begins at La Besurta, at the very end of the Benasque Valley road. In high season (summer and bank holiday weekends) the stretch between Llanos del Hospital and La Besurta is closed to private vehicles, so you’ll need to take the shuttle bus from the car park further down the road. Check the timetable before you set off.

When to go
Late June to October is the best window: the shuttle is running and the meadows are clear of snow. The waterfall is at its most dramatic in early summer, at the height of the thaw.
What to bring
Water and some food, comfortable walking shoes and a light warm layer: easy walk or not, you’re above 1,900 metres and the weather turns quickly. In summer, a hat and sun cream for the open meadows, where there’s no shade.
