At 3,404 metres, Aneto is the highest peak in the Pyrenees and one of the most sought-after mountain objectives in Spain. The classic ascent is a 21.8 km round trip, with 1,590 m of elevation gain and about 10-11 hours in total, starting from Hospital de Benasque (1,808 m).
This isn’t just any hike: it includes a crossing of the Aneto glacier and an exposed section, the Paso de Mahoma, in the final metres before the summit. Crampons, an ice axe and prior high-mountain experience are essential.
Overnight stay
The Renclusa Refuge is the usual overnight base before the ascent, and it noticeably shortens the following day.
Be prepared for the climb
This is a hike that requires good preparation — every year there are many rescues. Before setting off, check Aneto Seguro — the leading safety initiative for this mountain, backed by the Government of Aragón, the Aragonese Mountaineering Federation, mountain guides and the valley’s tourism association — for information on snow level, crevasse conditions, phone coverage and physical-preparation advice.
